The DC Democratic Party is trying to stop an effort to implement ranked choice voting in the city. They argued in a lawsuit that low-income and Black voters would be confused by the system. The 33-page lawsuit filed in DC Superior Court by the District of Columbia Democratic Party argues that implementing the voting system would violate the DC Human Rights Act, a portion of local law prohibiting discrimination. Under the system, the lowest-performing candidates are sequentially eliminated and their votes are redistributed to other candidates based on voters' rankings. And Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York recently introduced a bill to block the implementation of ranked-choice voting in Washington, DC.

US appeals court vacates travel mask mandate ruling

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court panel Thursday vacated an April 2022 ruling that had declared unlawful a government order requiring masks on airplanes and other transportation modes during the COVID-19 pandemic. "There is not a grain of evidence that the CDC has any plans to promulgate an identical mandate," the court ruled. In April 2022, a U.S. district judge ruled the CDC lacked legal authority to issue a nationwide travel mask mandate. The plaintiffs who sued to overturn the mask mandate had urged the court not to dismiss the case. A report from U.S. lawmakers in October said the Trump administration in 2020 blocked the CDC from adopting a federal transportation mask mandate.

Lumumba said Monday that his administration intends to cooperate with federal officials. In late 2019, the state Health Department notified the EPA about concerns with the city’s water system. An inspection by the EPA raised alarms about problems, including not having enough properly credentialed staff members at the city’s water treatment plants. Mark Chalos, an attorney who filed the most recent class-action lawsuit, said many Jacksonians remain suspicious of the city’s water quality.
